There are so-called cures for tinnitus out in the world today that range from pills to surgery, but there is a reason these treatments remain unapproved by the FDA (Food & Drug Administration): they simply do not work. At Intermountain Audiology, we have dedicated our efforts to fighting tinnitus with an FDA-approved therapy that has been clinically shown to reduce or eliminate ringing in the ears. The team at our St. George, Richfield, Hurricane, and Cedar City tinnitus treatment centers are proud to provide a risk-free option to help you combat the noise in your ears.

Tinnitus Explained by Dr. Keith Darrow, Ph.D., CCC-A, Audiologist & Doctor of Speech and Hearing Bioscience and Technology

What Is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is defined as a sensation of sound in your ears, or sometimes in your head. Each person with tinnitus has a different experience: patients have described sounds that range from ringing to whooshing to the sound inside of a seashell.

Tinnitus is experienced by 80% of people with hearing loss. Some of these people only notice their tinnitus in a quiet room, whereas many others experience the sound all day long. Whether you experience tinnitus intermittently or constantly, we understand how much it can interfere with your daily life.

What Causes Tinnitus?

The prevailing theory on why people with hearing loss experience tinnitus is called the ‘Central Gain’ theory. According to this theory, the sound you hear in your ears or head is the result of a loss of proper stimulation present in normal hearing individuals. In other words, because your brain is not properly stimulated by the ear, the brain attempts to make up for the missing stimulation, which results in over-exciting your system. This neurological phenomenon has been likened to ‘phantom limb’ experience.

How Can You Treat Tinnitus?

Fortunately, there is a safe treatment option available today. In fact, the only FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved treatment option for tinnitus is to provide your brain with the proper stimulation. There is no pill, no surgery, no other available option approved to treat tinnitus. Today’s treatment options are available for people with hearing loss, as well as for individuals with normal hearing. Most patients who undergo therapy at our St. George, Richfield, Hurricane, and Cedar City tinnitus treatment centers report a significant reduction in their daily tinnitus experience. Some even say the ringing disappears completely during the day!

"I've been with Dr. Manwarring for several years now. Having a good audiologist is very important to me. I've tried a couple of others, and they just don't seem to fit right with my needs and expectations.I would highly recommend Dr. Manwarring to anyone. Because of him, I have been given quality care, relate well with him, and I know I can depend on him to help me with my hearing aid and hearing loss needs."- Michelle B. 5 star
"They are always professional and friendly. They were able to assist my mother with getting hearing aids that work for her. They knew what type would suit her best. Service is excellent. I would recommend them to everyone who has hearing issues!"- Joan Y. 5 star
"Justin Bateman, the audiologist I worked with for my annual follow up and maintenance. He was so knowledgeable and thorough. He made a minor tweak to my hearing aids to adjust for a slight change in my hearing. It noticeably improved my hearing while wearing my hearing aids. Justin was very pleasant and efficient to deal with. I highly recommend this office."- Kerry W. 5 star
